How do synthetic diamonds differ from fake diamonds?
Synthetic diamonds should not be confused with fake diamonds. Artificial diamonds are real diamonds, but created by humans using industrial tools. The physical, chemical and optical characteristics are identical to diamonds who are mined.
Fake diamonds have the same physical characteristics as natural diamonds, but their chemical characteristics are totally different. In case of doubt it is therefore always advisable to consult a gemologist.
Which impact do synthetic diamonds have on the jewellery market?
The African continent supplies 60% of the rough diamonds used in the global production. For many African countries such as Congo, Angola, South-Africa, Namibia or Sierra Leone, the diamond industry is their main source of income. The Indian diamond association Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council estimates the annual production of synthetic diamonds to be around 350.000 carat, versus around 150 million carat for natural diamonds.
Compared to natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds are cheaper because they are sold for a lower price. Their steady increasing production concerns both NGO´s as well the African countries that produce them.
